Chapter eight
The City of Towers
Adelyn, her friends, Tiala, Ella and Branthum arrived at the mountain-like hills of Eranor Field. The sun neared midday as its warmth and a soft breeze embraced them, and they smiled as they traveled together.
The hills before them were covered in thick grass and shrubbery no higher than a small child, with short trees rife with dark green leaves no bigger than a thumbnail. Above, the sky was covered with great ravens that danced through the air with a gurgling caw.
As she looked around, Adelyn noticed the Pelnor Mountains were no longer visible, for the mountains turned northeast and faded not far after passing the northern edge of Barrenwood. The mountains on the far western side had also vanished, and on either side of them the mountains were replaced with large forests.
A wide river snaked through the great hills, and Tiala mentioned it shared the same name as the field. They followed the river for a short time as the road wove along with it, passing travelers and soldiers with shocked expressions over Ella and Branthum. The journey would slow a few times due to being stopped and explaining their presence, and that the aradyne have indeed returned. Never once did anyone show any ill will toward them, and they were welcomed with wide smiles which warmed their hearts.
The road strayed from the river after a short time and made its way up a tall hill. As they crested the hill, Adelyn's mouth fell agape as she looked upon many great towers in the distance. There looked to be twenty or more, and some rose high above the hills. Some were shaped different from others, and her heart swelled as the excitement to see the city grew, for she always wished to visit the great wizard city since she was a child.
She gazed upon the towers as much as she could while they made their way up and down a few of the smaller mountain-like hills, taking in their details. Some were slim with a pointed hat like a wizard would wear, while others were wider with several points and spires of varying sizes. Some had flags, while others looked jagged or as though a home sat on top. Her eyes glistened in the sun, and the shadows in her heart were subdued once again as her steps became light.
Before long in the afternoon, the road passed over the river by way of a thick wooden bridge. As they crossed over, Adelyn could see that the river flowed under the wall through a portcullis and into Magia. The wall loomed high above, half as tall as Parallim's, and was of a gray rocky stone. She could see that many of the towers were of the same stone or of cut stone, while a few of the smaller ones were made of wood.
On each corner of the wall stood a large watchtower, and once close enough, she spied mages and wizards among the guards that stood watch on top.
